Embedding Sound

Trying to download music and sounds from Web 2.0 resources proved to be tricky today. So, its going to be best to record, store and then insert our own into the presentations. Decisions as to which original music or sounds are appropriate need consideration. Students should follow the guidance as to how the evidence for embedding sound needs to be written up.

Creating a video

Today we’re going to try some VERY simple movie production and editing. We’re possibly not going to be using the limited features of the Digital Blue camcorders, but they’re a handy device to start off with.

A series of tutorials links are available on my delicious as well as a quick tutorial and instructions for use.

Animations

It appears that students don’t really like the ‘clumsy’ look of Scratch animations and are going to create these in Flash instead. As such, I’ll have a look at the animations at the start of next week. 

Please remember that in order to get the advanced marks, one has to produce an animation of THREE frames or commands. WJEC guidance states that students will get 2 marks for animation, one for an original and one for a more complex one:

Mark 1. Use of original animation / Flash graphics
Simple animation such as
-3d Textmaker
graphic e.g. wordart
grows and shrinks
or
-simple ‘flash type animation
(two commands) e.g. create ball then make ball bounce
or
-simple 2 frame animation in photo editing software
NB animated Gifs not produced entirely by the candidate gained no marks.

Mark 2. More complex graphical animations
As above but with at least 3 frames or commands
NB animated Gifs not produced entirely by the candidate gained no marks.
You must show your evidence of construction.

Unit2 Task 3 Sound & Animation

I think that a little more explanation and guidance is required for these two elements in your Powerpoint presentations.
1. Sound:  A note from WJEC Exam Board details, ‘The candidates must find or create the sound for themselves. They cannot get the mark for example, for using a file which the teacher, or someone else has provided in a resource folder. They have to physically download it from the web or copy it from the CD or MP3 themselves. The examples in the bulleted list are examples of acceptable processes. Candidates must also show how and where they used the sound. This is usually achieved with annotated screenshots of a part of the process but must also show it embedded in the final presentation or web page.’ I suggest that when students create or record any dialogue or any unique sounds, they use Audacity. 2. Animation: Graphical Animation should be complex in order to score the two marks. (See Unit 2 Marking guide) I am creating links to some good resources and tutorials on Flash animation. The first is from the Dida Skillsgym website, which also has audio and video tutorials and the second Flash Tutorial is from www.ictcoverlessons.com. The site has been constructed by a teacher and he supplies the files to work with as well. The last resource is a weighty document, so it will take a while to open. The first document is a Title Page and the second is the Flash Skills Workbook. (I’m not sure whose document this is, so if the author would let me know I’d happily credit their hard work!) Finally, have a look at this promotional Flash Movie to get some ideas.

Alternatively, students can create an animation from the ‘Scratch‘ programme which is a free download.  There are plenty of tutorials on this programme. Students can also follow my delicious link on Scratch.

3. Video: Here is a link to a tutorial on MovieMaker – an application which we have on the school network. Even though the tutorial covers working with British Pathe films, the basic principles can be followed. Alternatively, students can use other movie editing and tutorials/applications if they wish.

Unit2: Task 3 Presentation to an Audience

This week we’re moving onto the ‘Presentation to an Audience’ task for Unit 2. Students will be doing the work as a Powerpoint presentation and not as a webpage. Please follow the A Level calendar for deadlines for completion of this task.

I am currently reconstructing the guidance to the left of this blog entry as I don’t think that the old titles are all too clear. The guidance will be split into EXEMPLARS, which will indicate how the various tasks in Unit 2 should be completed and GUIDANCE, which will show how and where the marks are allocated. The GUIDANCE section will also give a clear indication of what to do and what NOT to do. Some of these are still weighty documents, so have patience when you open them!
